I Want to Eat Your Candy!

Happy Halloween to one and all from the scary little vampire of the family. We are all a little strange around here, I love to cackle a witch laugh now and then, and the hubby has been known to partake of "brew" and "spirits" too. But our little vampire has really outdone us!

This is really her time of year, and frankly, she goes a little crazy when she hears the word "candy"!

But, with Daddy to accompany her, she was able to make the rounds and not get too wild!

Still, while she was away, strange things happened! Like this message mysteriously left on her etch a sketch!

Autumn Color Finally!

We finally got a sunny day the other day, so I made sure to get some shots of the trees in our front and back yard.

Below is the maple tree in our front yard, that is my favorite!

The next two pics are trees in the back on our neighbors lawn, just behind our fence.

This tree is on the other side of the back lawn.

Cousin Leal's Molasses Cookies

Now that Halloween is so close, we had to make cookies! This year I decided to go back to the molasses cookie recipe that I got from my mom for Halloween cookies. Nothing against Martha's chocolate cookies, but we really prefer these. They are really a lot like gingerbread and so easy to make.

Here is the recipe:

1/2 cup shortening

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup molasses

1/2 cup buttermilk

2 tsp. soda

1 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/8 tsp nutmeg

1/2 tsp. salt

3 c. flour

Mix together wet ingredients and the dry ingredients in different bowls. Then add the dry to the wet. chill the dough and then roll out and cut. Bake cookies at 350 degrees F. (I leave them in for about 9 min. in my oven)>
This can be doubled if you are making for Chirstmas.

My Place and Yours week 2

This weeks theme for Pip's game is "bedside", so here is my little nightstand. I found the nightstand (there are two) at an antique sale. I found the vintage lamp shade at the thrift store and added it to a base I already had. It's such a small lamp, that I raised it up on a cake stand and some books. There's also a vintage record cover, the book "mrs. 'arris goes to paris" (I loved this book, you should read it if you haven't), and a little mid century mod pitcher that I got from the thrift store too. Above that is a frame that I fitted a piece of corkboard into, painted and then stuck a bunch of my vintage pins into.

They are all sitting on top of a vintage head scarf.

My Place and Yours

This post is all about a meme stared by Pip over at "Meet Me at Mikes" blog.

Each week there is a new theme chosen by the "Theme Queen", and that person

changes every week too. The first week, which I missed, was
"on the shelf", and I'm playing catch up.

Here is a shelf in my bedroom that is for holding cups and saucers. I decided to change it up and instead I put a vintage doll and vintage kids book on the shelf and then hang some jewelry from the hooks. This is such a fun game, and I hope to keep going. bye for now!

WAYBACK Wednesday!

Sorry I missed last week, but the allergies really got me for awhile! So, now I'm back with this book I found while antiquing. The book isn't in the best of shape, esp. the cover. But the pictures on the inside are still wonderful.

It's titled "Aren't you glad" and the illustrator is Elaine Kurtz.

I just love these two girls (above and below) in their pretty dresses with flowers all around!

And how can you resist these fabulous orange cats!

I've always love sky lines with the city and trees.

And this sweet little forest is so wonderful!

I also am partial to cut away walls, where you feel like you are peeking into a house.

A Hauntingly Magical Celebration 2009

Come on in for a the celebration!

The witches are having a soiree,

They may be a little long in the tooth,

but they still have magic they say!

They are dressed up to the nines,

who says witches need be dowdy.

In fact, they love to dress up fancy

And get a little rowdy!

They made sure to decorate the parlor,

with lots of ghoulish glamour.

And then make lots of devilish tidbits,

That would make a mortal stammer.

Don't forget the witches cupboard ,

full of lots of strange concoctions.

But please remember to eat them slowly,

Or, you may need to see the doctor!

With all the the goodies and games to play,

you might want to tarry.

But that's okay, because they say....

a good time is never scary!

Allergies smallergies!

I really love fall, I really do! But unfortunately with fall comes ragweed season and my allergies!I was doing pretty well, using my neti pot really seems to help.

But there is only so much it can do, and now my nose is really activated. So I'm not really feeling very good right now, but maybe the fact that we got an early snow will help.

Yesterday, I made some ymmy apple bars, apple and cinnamon makes the best scent and flavor ever.

Pumpkin bar recipe and vintage watercolor

First I want to give out the recipe for the pumpkin bars I
showed a picture of:

PUMPKIN BROWNIES

1-1/4c. whole wheat flower

1c. brown sugar

1 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1/2 tsp. salt

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. ginger

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. cloves

1 cup canned pumpkin puree

1/4 cup nonfat buttermilk

1/4 cup canola oil

2 large eggs, beaten

2 tsp. vanilla extract

1c. dark chocolate chips (I used semi sweet and that worked fine)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Spray a 9x13 pan with nonstick cooking spray. Set aside.

Combine flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices in a large bowl. Add pumpkin puree, buttermilk, oil, eggs and vanilla extract to dry ingredients. Mix well. Fold in choco chips.

Spread into pan and bake on center rack for 30-40 min.

Makes 24 brownies, 123 cal. each

Next, I want to let you see a vintage watercolor, but not just any old watercolor! I did this watercolor of pansies when I was 13 years old. My mom had it all these years and sent it to me this week. So I framed it and added a bit of lace around the edges for fun.

Then I added a flower on top I made out of yellow chenille bumps.

It's pretty easy to do, just cut a small styrofoam ball in half and then stick the bumps into the foam. I sort of overlapped them. Then I added a coiled up piece of purple chenille stem for the center and green chenille bumps for leaves.

I thought it turned out pretty good, and added a bit of fun to the frame.

Fall is here! and other tidbits!

What says "fall is here" for me? How about baking. This is a new recipe I found called "pumpkin brownies". They are pretty darn good, maybe because they have chocolate chips in them!

And, of course, new school clothes are a sign! Here is the kid in her new jeans and top.

I love the little bird!

Smoke isn't really a sign, but I thought that he looked rather wistful in an autumn sort of way.

And, this year fall meant a change in hair color for me. I already have dyed it red twice, but the first two colors were either too light or too dark.

But this color, "spiced tea" was just right I think. It's by Clairol, Natural Instincts. The only thing is that it's not a permanent color so I'm a little worried how long it lasts. It's supposed to be gentle enough to use a lot more so I guess we will see.

I sure do like the shade though, so I hope it works out. I'm running out of options, as there aren't that many red hair colors.

This week I wanted to show a bit of a vintage craft magazine I found when I was out antiquing. It appears to be from the 60's . The first pic just made me swoon cause it's an ad for jewel handbag kits! I adore vintage jeweled handbags, and I actually have a couple of these in my collection!

Next is an ad for felt decorations.


And, I'm sure than anyone 35 or older remembers these glass grape clusters!

But maybe the weirdest and funnest ad was in the back. Check out this pet monkey ad! I didn't even know that you could buy pet monkeys back then! If I had, I probably would have asked for one, although as an adult I think it's a crazy idea!
